Annual Awards Contest Underway

Rules and entry forms for the 2001 Annual Awards Contest have been mailed to AHP members and are also available online. The deadline date is January 29, 2001. Remember! Your 2001 membership dues must be paid by January 29, or your entries will be ineligible. Late entries will not be accepted. Several changes have been made by the Awards Committee to improve this year's contest. Be sure to read through the rules carefully noting the following revisions.

Editorial content classes.

1. Instructions have been revised to read: Judging will be based on writing only. Eliminate all art, photos, charts, and illustrations unless necessary to the comprehension of the story.

2. Series classes have been added in the following categories: Instructional, news reporting and horse care: All other classes will be based on single article entries only. The criteria for these classes remains the same as for the single article class, but the following sentence has been added to all series classes: "All articles in series must have been published in 2000 and have a sense of continuity which identifies them as a series."

Illustration classes.

Instructions for mounting have been revised for the Illustration class only. Mount tear sheet of entire article in which the illustration was published, indicating the illustration to be judged." Change was based on a judge's recommendation to provide an explanation of the illustration by requiring the entire article. The photography classes will remain as last year requiring only a tear sheet of the page on which the photograph was published.

General Excellence & Specialty classes.

Specialty classes include Single Issue/Specialty Publication, Equine-related Book and Equine Calendar. Only General Excellence and Single Issue/Specialty Publication entries must include a completed Statement of Purpose.

General Excellence Newsletter class.

The sentence about newsletters must not include advertisements has been eliminated and replaced with the following: "Format must be listed as newsletter and entry cannot be entered in any other General Excellence class."

General Excellence Awards.

In each General Excellence division, there will be a First Place plaque awarded. At the discretion of the judge, one Honorable Mention certificate will be presented in classes with 5-10 entries and two Honorable Mention certificates in classes where there are over 10 entries.

The AHP Board of Directors and Awards Committee encourages members to enter the General Excellence classes. The contest offers a variety of divisions, which allows members an opportunity to be judged within their own circulation or format. And, each entry receives a constructive critique from the judge, which is well worth the $25 entry fee. So why not give it a shot this year?

2001 Membership is REQUIRED.

In order to enter the 2001 Awards Contest, you must have paid your annual membership dues for 2001. Renewal notices are in the mail. If you did not receive your renewal notice or have misplaced it, please contact Chris at 904-760-7743 or email ahorsepubs@aol.com immediately.

Awards Deadline & Presentation.

Remember that this year's contest deadline is January 29, 2001, so why not review issues from 2000 over the holidays and you'll be ready to begin preparing your entries the beginning of January 2001.

Awards will be presented on Saturday evening, June 23, 2001, during the AHP Seminar at the San Mateo Marriott in San Mateo, California. If you have any questions regarding the Awards Contest or the 2001 Seminar, contact Chris at 904-760-7743 or email ahorsepubs@aol.com.

AHP Newsstand Hits The Road

The AHP Trade Show Program is a co-operative program that provides members with a cost effective way to exhibit at national and regional equine events. Publication members have an opportunity to distribute their publications and acquire valuable subscriber leads generated from the free drawing for a one-year subscription that are held during each event. Leads are available on labels, disk or email file. Added distribution at these major equine events is also a bonus for your advertisers. Publications with a circulation under 5,000 are offered the option to participate in the program by choosing to send half the number of copies for half price. Free distribution allows members who contract their own space at these events to use the AHP booth as a second point of distribution and members with a free publication to participate. A group discount is available for publication members published by the same publisher: 2 publications = $50 discount off total fees per event; 3 publications = $100 discount off total fees per event; 4 or more publications = $200 discount off total fees per event.

Affiliate and Corporate members may also participate in this program and have an opportunity to distribute up to 300 copies of one promotional piece advertising their product or service. No sales or orders will be taken at the booth. Member participating fees are assessed based on cost of exhibit space, furniture rental, supplies, staffing, drayage, and/or any additional expenses directly associated with the booth. Participating members are responsible for shipping their publications or promotional pieces to the event on time.

Events scheduled for the 2001 Trade Show Program are:

¨   Horse World Expo, January 19-21, 2001—Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, MD—The 5th annual Horse World Expo is located in the center of Baltimore’s beautiful hunt country.

AHP Who’s Who

After 21 years at its original home on a San Marcos Quarter Horse ranch, California Horsetrader, Inc. has moved its offices and operations to a larger, modern facility in nearby Escondido. The relocation effort culminates a year-long search for a new home by the company, publishers of the semi-monthly California Horsetrader and its fast-growing website, www.horsetrader.com. “The ranch office had a dreamy atmosphere with pastures out each window and beautiful horses grazing,” said Publisher Warren Wilson. “Unfortunately, we had outgrown the facility and the technology that serves it.” The new 12,000 square-foot building has room to grow, Wilson said, and its high-speed Internet connectivity assures the location will meet technical demands into the 2000s. The company’s new information includes: California Horsetrader, Inc., P.O. Box 462950, Escondido, CA 92046-2950; Phone: 760-546-1184; Fax: 760-546-1459.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners has revised the association’s logo to reflect the continual advances in equine health care and the important relationship between veterinarian, horse and owner. Helping to communicate the AAEP’s mission is the new tagline, “Raising the Standard in Horse Health.” For copies of the new logo to use in conjunction with their owner education articles and news releases, contact Sally Baker at 859-233-0147.

Larry Hulsebus joins Western & English Today magazine as its Eastern US and International accounts advertising representative. Larry has 20 years of publishing experience, including 15 years at Tack ‘n Togs Merchandising and most recently as Vice President of B2B eCommerce Sales at eStable, Inc. In related news, Jennifer Bryant, joins the W&E staff at the beginning of the year as the regularly contributing “English Editor.”In October, US Farm & Ranch Supply Co., Inc., the Texas-based holding company that earlier this year acquired Cowboys & Indians Magazine, announced the acquisition of Western & English Today.

NRCHA announces Winter Stock Horse Spectacular

The National Reined Cow Horse Association has announced that its new Winter Stock Horse Spectacular will be held during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. With over 3 million visitors expected in northern Utah during the Olympics, the event, slated for February 13, 14 and 15, will showcase the finest cow horse action to a world-wide audience. It will be held in the Legacy Center in Farmington, Utah, just north of Salt Lake City, which is centrally located between the sites of major winter Olympic venues.

Contestants will qualify for the Winter Stock Horse Spectacular based on their open NRCHA earnings in 2001. Both Non Pro and Open riders can compete on any horse or combination of horses throughout the year, but it is the rider's total open earnings that will determine the ranking. The top fifteen open money earners for 2001, from January 1 through December 31, will be invited to participate in the unique three-day event.

In the first performance, entries will ride 6-year-old and over horses in an NRCHA approved bridle. The second night will see them showing 5-year-old horses in snaffle bits or hackamores. On the final night, the contestants will ride 5-year-old and older horses in a bridle. Each day of competition will feature herd, reining and cow work and will have a separate payout, with the top place in each of the three performances earning $25,000.

For information on the Winter Stock Horse Spectacular, contact the National Reined Cow Horse Association at 559-992-4405 or visit the website at www.nrcha.com.
