Jessica Bagley

Converse CollegeJessica has been involved in cutting horses since a young age, showing through the National Cutting Horse Association. As a youth, she served as the National Reporter which was when she realized her passion for writing and sharing people's stories. For the NCHA, she wrote a monthly youth column for her two years as reporter. She has also put together and written a daily newsletter for the Augusta Futurity, and wrote a monthly youth column for her local area's cutting publication. It is her career goal to work in marketing in the performance horse industry, as well as part time writing of fiction, non-fiction and feature stories.

Katherine A. Carr

Irvine High SchoolKahterine has had approximately 20 stories or photos published in the local newspaper. She recently co-authored an article about high school students participating in an equestrian event that was published in the Orange County Register. The editor has asked her to write more articles about horses, She has ridden horses in California and Hawaii.

Hailey Elin Harroun

Colorado State UniversityHailey was the 2010 AHP Student Award Winner. She is in veterinary school at Colorado State University. She plans to write equine medical and health articles and specialize in equine orthopedic surgery.

Kelsey D. Hellmann

Texas A&M UniversityAs a student at Texas A&M, Kelsey was graphics editor of the AgriLeader and managed three different social media accounts for various horse organizations. She has shown all around horses for eight years and reining horses for four years. Her passion for horses and creativity have guided her to know that she would like to work with equine publications and then manage her own design company.

Melissa Keith

Nova Scotia Community College, Waterfront CampusMelissa is a former pleasure rider who now enjoys regularly freelancing for harness racing publications and who watches and wager on harness racing every week. She plans to continue covering the sport, regardless of where her engineering tech diploma takes her. Melissa's goal is to ultimately claim a harness horse and get even more involved in harness racing, while contributing to a racing magazine as a staff writer.

Lisa Kucharski

Truman State UniversityLisa is a freshman majoring in Communications/Journalism with a minor in Equine Science. Growing up around horses, Lisa has always known that she wanted her career to be in the horse industry. Twelve years of 4-H has provided her with extensive hands-on experience from basic care to state champion level competition. She’s gained knowledge through horse bowl, hippology and judging and developed a passion for communications through public speaking. Attending AHP seminars over the last 10 years with her mother, who is editor for The Sentinel, has exposed her to the world of equine publishing and discovered a potential career path combining her love of the horse with her aptitude for writing, creativity and speaking. She is starting her journey as staff writer for her college paper, The Index.

Amanda McMurray

Arizona State UniversityAmanda is a senior at Arizona State University who is sincerely interested in all things equestrian and understands the value of communication through publications in the horse industry. Amanda is very eager to learn as much as she can and believes she is fortunate that there is an association such as AHP to assist her in achieving her goal. Although Amanda feels she lacks direct publishing expereience, she hopes to contribute in some way to the organization. As both a student and a rider, she cannot express enough her interest in becoming involved in this industry. Amanda believes it is crucial to the development of the horse world that we involve ourselves as much as we can, and that AHP has provided a channel to do so.

Amanda Oppold

Northwestern UniversityAmanda attends the Medill School of Journalism at Nprthwestern University. She is definitely planning to pursue a career in equine publishing. She is especially interested in equestrian magazines. She has ridden horses, training in dressage, since the age of six. Amanda has competed in recognized dressage shows through 3rd level and is currently a rider on the Northwestern Equestrian Team. At school, she is also a writer for her campus.

Christine Rudd

Averett UniversityChristine attends Averett University majoring in Equestrian Studies and Journalism. She has been riding for eight years in hunter/jumper and dressage and showing at the lower levels only. Since she loves being part of the horse world so much and enjoys writing as well, it is her goal to write for an equine publication after graduation, working her way into editing. She plans to join the school newspaper staff and contribute regularly next semester.

Stephanie Smolek

University of Nebraska-Lincoln2011 AHP Student Award Winner Stephanie, a junior majoring in Agricultural Journalism and Animal Science, hopes to work as a writer or editor in equine publishing. She has written for daily newspapers in Nebraska, Saddle Up Nebraska, school publications and for the Nebraska Farm Bureau. Stephanie grew up with horses and has the most experience with trail horses and training young horses. She is also debating working in online publishing after college. Opportunities in telecommuting interest her as well.

Elizabeth Walsh

Columbia UniversityElizabeth began taking western riding lessons as a five-year-old and was instantly hooked. At age 11, she got her first horse and at 13 she began to barrel race competitively. Her love of barrel racing led her to Barrel Horse News in June 2010. She started as a youth correspondent with a bimonthly column and she has since moved on to larger assignments, mostly event coverage.

Jennifer Lynn Whittle

University of KentuckyJennifer was a 2009 AHP Travel Award Winner. She grew up on a small horse farm in Kentucky where her family raised Appaloosa horses. She has been riding and working with horses since she could walk. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in December 2009 with a degree in Agricultural Communications. During her time at UK, she has worked for eXtension.org and developed countless internet skills. In the summer of 2009, she interned for Kim Brown at The Horse and TheHorse.com. Her future plans involve working with online equine publications and developing websites for horse farms. Currently, she is pursuing a master's degree at UK in Career, Technical, and Leadership Education.
