AHP Newsgroup: Christina Handley Offers New Series of Online Horse Photography Courses
Aspiring equine photographers can learn how to take pro quality photos using tips and techniques from well known horse photographer Christina Handley.

Christina and Laura are professional photographers and lifelong horse owners who bring years of field experience to their teaching.
These courses are for any one who wants to improve their horse photography for every reason from capturing precious memories to making better photos of their horses for sale. The first course in the series is Horse Headshots beginning March 4th. Future topics will be action shots, liberty and conformation.
The courses are full of practical and easy to follow advice. “Headshots should be taken with a telephoto lens.” says Christina “This means you should backup and zoom in for the most flattering look. In this course, students will learn how to take pro quality headshots using the same tips and techniques that we use everyday.”
The course explains which settings to use and when to use them, in easy to understand plain language. Here are three tips for better headshots from the course.

Focus on the horse’s nearest eye. It is very important that the eyes be in sharp focus. Humans are drawn to the eyes and when they are in sharp focus your viewer will make a stronger connection with the subject and your photo will have more impact and life.

Fill the frame. Your horse should be taking up at least 50% of the photo. Zoom to the long end of your lens and walk closer until your horse’s head and neck fill the frame.

Blur the background to make horse stand out. The blurred background is easy to achieve by using a telephoto lens set to an open aperture like f/5.6. An open aperture gives a shallow depth of field making the background a soft blur of color.
