KINGSTON, PA – Luzerne County children’s author, Sharon Miner,
finally met one of the horses featured in her Beloved Horses series. Sir
Portly, a 29 year old school horse owned by Beverly Patrick of Upsum Downs
Farm in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, kindly submitted to thousands of little
hands stroking his winter fur as the horse-loving youngsters and their
families attended a special event at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History
in Pittsburgh recently.
The free event, called Equustravaganza, was held to celebrate the HORSE
exhibit that continues there through May 24, 2009.
Miner had interviewed the horse’s owner via e-mail for her book, BELOVED
HORSES FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY, published in 2005 by Infinity. Miner was
delighted to finally meet them both.
“In the story, Portly helps a child with multiple health problems achieve
his goal to ride and jump over fences just like his big sister,” explains
Miner. “Of course, the jumps were set so low that Portly could walk over
them easily. But the young boy was thrilled with his achievement.”
At the event, Miner signed numerous copies of her books, did face and hand
paintings of horses and Girls Scouts earned their Horse Fan badge by
listening to stories from her books.
The Beloved Horses series are illustrated collections of true short stories
for horse lovers of all ages. The fourth book in the series will be released
next year and Miner is looking for more amazing and inspirational stories to
include. Riders may contact her at sharonminer@yahoo.com and her
books can be view at her site,
