Availability/Duration: Year-round
Requirements: Applicants must be students at a college or university that is willing to offer credits for the internship; Journalism or like majors encouraged
Duties: The internship provides the experience of being an employee at the magazine. The person who comes on board will need to step up and work hard to assist with all aspects of the business—assembling text and photos, proofreading, making changes to electronic files, organizing electronic information, physical filing and organizing, mailing complimentary copies of the magazine, helping subscribers locate articles, etc. He or she will also have writing assignments as appropriate.

Equestrian Calendar Aiken
Online Equestrian Resource website for the Carolinas and Georgia
Internships offered: Equine Journalist-using content from the Carolinas and Georgia, either on your own or via assignment. Marketing – social media skills would be a plus! Data Entry
Availability/Duration: Earliest convenience through the 2014-2015 (April) show season. Could become a full time position for the right person.
Requirements: love for horses, creative and original with writing style. A 1000 word article example required, with a couple of photos.
Duties: 6 to 8 1200 word articles per month. Social media skill is a plus.

Housing provided: Private bedroom in shared house in Aiken, S.C. This could be a perfect situation for the person wanting to bring their horse to Aiken to compete for the season that needs a place to stay and that can make the time to write. Or the horseless horse lover that wants to experience all that Aiken has to offer during the show season.

Duties: Conducting interviews and writing profiles or other articles. May be asked to attend horse shows to perform interviews and write about them, depending on location. Will be asked to perform other minor writing related tasks as needed.

The Chronicle of the Horse

Availability/Duration: Rolling, sessions last 3-6 months
Requirements: In-depth knowledge of horse sports and riders, especially in at least one of our core sports: dressage, eventing and hunter/jumper. Exceptional writing skills. Duties:  Our interns are treated like staff members, with real duties and responsibilities that vary little from the rest of the staff. Interns are responsible for writing news, features and other content for the Chronicle network. They will also research projects, interview experts, manage and publish online photo galleries and contribute to special projects as needed.  Normal hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some weekends are spent on assignment. This is a competitive program.

The Horse: Your Guide To Equine Health Care and TheHorse.com
The Horse is an all-breed, all discipline equine education provider for hands-on participants in the horse industry. It will disseminate the latest and most reliable news and information on the health, care, management, and welfare of equids through print and electronic means.
Internships offered: One unpaid editorial internship available three times per year; student usually gets college credit
Availability/Duration: The duration of our internships (3 offered per year) are a semester length (or duration of the summer) if for college credit.
Requirements: The candidate should have practical hands-on horse knowledge and experience and a desire to help owners take better care of their horses. He or she should have taken college-level English, communications, and/or journalism courses. He or she should be comfortable working in Word, Excel, Explorer, and Office, and should be familiar with or willing to learn basic HTML. A preference is given to candidates proficient in Adobe’s Creative Suite (InCopy, InDesign). The candidate should be prepared to work as a team player in a professional office environment. The student, his/her advisor, and the Editor-in-Chief of The Horse agree on the goals and job duties of the student. A minimum of 16 hours per week of work is required.                                   
Duties: Assisting staff members with the flow of editorial copy through the magazine production process, writing, posting content on The Horse.com, assisting with photo selection, online content management, and production of electronic products (such as videos and online live events).

The Saratoga Special
Saratoga's daily newspaper on Thoroughbred racing.
Internships offered: Editorial
Availability/Duration: Seasonal during Saratoga racing season (July 24 - Sept. 7)
Requirements: Lots of enthusiasm and willingness to learn by doing and not just observing. Knowledge and interest in horse racing and equestrian sports. Solid writing, interviewing and social skills. Proofreading skills and knowledge of AP Style and photography a bonus. Familiarity with CMS, Photoshop, multimedia and social networking is helpful.
Duties:  Interns are regular working members of editorial staff with all responsibilities and opportunities. They represent publication in the mornings for workouts, interview owners, trainers, jockeys and others during mornings and afternoons at the races and contribute in the production process of 5x per week daily newspaper. A summer on The Special is a unique internship and the chance to interact and work alongside many of the racing industry's most prominent players.
