In 2008, she interned with the American Quarter Horse Association, writing 19 articles for the association’s three publications. Currently attending veterinary school at Colorado State University, Hailey plans to write equine medical and health articles and specialize in equine orthopedic surgery.

She is the daughter of Patrice Johnson and Steve Harroun of Washington State.

2010 Student Award Committee chairman was Cheryl Erpelding of California Riding Magazine. She reviewed the 18 applicants who were scored on the following criteria: academics, relevant experience, skills/abilities, presentation of materials, and career goals/assertiveness. Hailey was one of three students who won $750 Travel Awards to the Lexington seminar. The other two Travel Award winners were Laura Villasana, University of Kentucky, and Jada Buchanan, Ball State University. All three young ladies were interviewed by the Student Award Committee during the seminar and the committee members selected Hailey as the 2010 Student Award Winner.
