Communications Department Fall 2021

Keeneland is accepting applications for the Keeneland Communications Department Fall 2021 Internship, a paid position from late August through late November that will provide broad experience in communications, public relations, media relations and writing during the busiest time of the year at Keeneland, which includes two live auctions and a race meet.

Preferred candidates possess an interest in pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred industry. Strong writing and communication skills; knowledge of reporting and newswriting, often on deadline, and proofreading skills must be demonstrated. The Communications intern will work with Keeneland’s social media, marketing, broadcast, sales and racing teams, and through your responsibilities will gain a greater understanding of Keeneland and the Thoroughbred industry.

Availability: August through November 2021
Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Keeneland September Yearling Sale (Sept. 13-25) • Help compile Media Kit information. • Assist with interviewing consignors/buyers during the sale. • Proofread materials as needed. • Provide notes/content for Keeneland.com and photo/video images for use on Keeneland’s social media accounts. Fall Race Meet (Oct. 8-30) • Help write press releases and assist with various press materials. • Assist notes team with compilation of daily Barn Notes; write news items. • Assist with interviewing jockeys and trainers following stakes races. • Assist with writing media advisories for on-track special events. • Aid staff with Press Box operations. • Assist with record-keeping, updating statistics. • Proofread materials as needed. • Provide notes/content for Keeneland.com and photo/video images for use on Keeneland’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. • Answer media requests for information/statistics. • Assist with media credentials. Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale (Nov. 9-19) • Help compile Media Kit information. • Assist with interviewing major consignors/buyers during sale sessions. • Proofread materials as needed. • Provide notes/content for Keeneland.com and photo/video images for use on Keeneland’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Administrative Duties • Assist with Press Box operations during sales and racing. • Copy and distribute material for media in Press Box. • Assist with writing/proofing additional materials.
Requirements: Qualifications • Currently enrolled as a college junior or senior, or recently earned a degree in Journalism, Communications, Integrated Strategic Communications or a related field. • Exceptional writing and communications skills; ability to work with diverse clients. • Knowledge/experience in Thoroughbred industry preferred. • Available during key periods of Keeneland sales and racing, especially Sept. 13-25 for the September Sale; Wednesdays-Sundays in October for the Fall race meet; and Nov. 9-12 and 15-16 for the November Sale. We will accommodate your schedule. • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with social networking sites. • Organized with the ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments. • Creative and flexible, a proven self-starter. • Ability to lift, push, pull or carry up to 50 lbs. • Willingness to follow Keeneland’s policies and procedures.
