The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) is pleased to announce an opening for the position of Editor of The Morgan Horse magazine—one of the equine industry's most respected and enduring breed journals.

Published continuously since October 15, 1941, The Morgan Horse magazine (TMH) is AMHA's official publication and a cornerstone of the Morgan horse community. Owned and operated by AMHA, the magazine plays a vital role in advancing the Association's mission to preserve, promote, and perpetuate the Morgan horse.

The successful candidate will step into leadership of a strong, thriving publication, following the retirement of a highly respected Editor who has guided TMH with distinction for the past 17 years. This is a rare opportunity to build upon a legacy of excellence while shaping the future vision of a publication that reaches a passionate and dedicated audience.

The Editor will join a small, collaborative, and highly committed team producing eight issues per year. TMH is widely regarded as one of the most vibrant and engaging breed journals in the equine industry, and we are seeking a motivated, skilled professional ready to assume the helm. This is a remote position, fully supported by the resources and infrastructure of both AMHA and The Morgan Horse magazine.

Compensation & Benefits

The Editor of TMH will receive a competitive base salary and a comprehensive benefits package as outlined in the AMHA Employee Handbook, including:

Paid holidays and vacation time
Flexibility may be available for additional compensation through advertising sales commissions for appropriately qualified candidates who wish to assume expanded duties such as ad sales, travel, or invoicing. Travel expenses and per diem costs are paid directly by TMH when applicable.

Reports to: AMHA Executive Director

The Morgan Horse magazine (TMH) is the official breed journal of the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) and has been published continuously since October 15, 1941. TMH is a respected, long-standing publication dedicated to preserving, promoting, and perpetuating the Morgan horse. AMHA is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors representing three established regions.

Position Overview

The Editor of The Morgan Horse magazine serves as the publication's chief editorial authority, with final decision-making responsibility for all editorial content and production matters. This role provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the magazine while collaborating closely with the magazine team and AMHA leadership. The Editor ensures TMH remains a high-quality, engaging, and mission-aligned publication for its readership.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as primary liaison to the AMHA Executive Director
Provide overall editorial leadership and direction for TMH
Plan and manage annual editorial calendars, issue themes, layout (imposition), and production deadlines
Oversee magazine budget, financial planning, and adherence to approved expenditures
Write feature articles and editorial content
Provide limited show and event coverage as needed
Manage press relations and external communications related to the magazine
Supervisory & Support Responsibilities

Supervise and support the Senior Magazine Associate, including:
Advertising team leadership including advertising themes and covers appropriate to the official breed journal
Direction of show and event coverage
Scheduling and oversight of freelance correspondents and candid photographers
Coordination with in-house design resources
Actively support and advance the mission, goals, and objectives of both TMH and AMHA


Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field preferred
Equivalent professional experience may substitute for formal education


Experience

Prior editorial experience preferred
Magazine publishing experience required (equine-related experience strongly preferred)
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated high-level writing proficiency
Working knowledge of Morgan horse history, bloodlines, an competition is ideal
Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred


Additional Skills & Attributes

Approachable, professional, and collaborative demeanor
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Proficiency with standard computer and publishing software (e.g., Microsoft Office)
Existing professional relationships within the Morgan horse community are preferred
Self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines in a remote work environment


Physical & Technical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, use stairs, and lift items up to 25 lbs occasionally
Limited travel required
Reliable, high-speed internet connection required
