Executive Director

The Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) seeks an accomplished Executive Director to lead one of the nation's most respected Thoroughbred industry organizations. Since 1929, MHBA has served as the principal advocate for Maryland's Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry and a steward of the state's rich equine heritage.

 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director serves as chief executive of MHBA and its affiliated entities, including the Jim McKay Maryland Million, the Maryland Horse Foundation, and Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. The position provides strategic, operational, financial, and advocacy leadership for the association, oversees a professional staff, and administers the Maryland-Bred Race Fund.

 

This is a rare opportunity for a seasoned leader to shape policy, strengthen an industry, and steward institutions central to Maryland's identity as a premier Thoroughbred state.

 

 


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership and day-to-day management of MHBA, including staff supervision and board relations.
  • Develop and implement MHBA's strategic vision in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
  • Serve as chief executive for MHBA-affiliated entities, including the Jim McKay Maryland Million and the Maryland Horse Foundation, overseeing governance, committees, and staff support.
  • Advocate for and represent Maryland's Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry in legislative, regulatory, and national industry forums.
  • Oversee MHBA's financial operations, including budgeting, audits, internal controls, and administration of the Maryland-Bred Race Fund.
  • Maintain strong relationships with breeders, owners, trainers, racetrack partners, legislators, regulators, and allied organizations.
  • Provide executive oversight of MHBA publications and communications, including Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred.
  • Support the activities of the MHBA Political Action Committee in compliance with applicable laws and reporting requirements.

 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the Thoroughbred, equine, agricultural, nonprofit, or membership-based sectors.
  • Strong understanding of the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry and its regulatory environment.
  • Proven financial management experience, including oversight of complex funds or programs.
  • Experience working effectively with boards, committees, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to engage effectively with legislators, regulators, and policymakers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
