Author Earns Best Magazine Article at Fourth Annual Event

Author and free-lance writer, Candace Wade won the Equus Film Festival WINNIE Award for Magazine Article. The award was presented in New York City on Sunday, November 20th at the fourth annual Equus Film Festival. This was the first year for the magazine category.

The “Saving Theo” series running in Horse Nation ( is a chronicle of the rescue and ongoing rehabilitation of a former “big lick” Tennessee Walker show horse. The series began in February 2016 with an introduction to the severely physically and emotionally damaged horse. The seven installments take the reader into the barn to watch over the shoulders of the team determined to save Theo’s life. “Saving Theo” is a primer on the physical, emotional and financial expense rehabbing a broken big lick horse can extract.

The Equus Film Festival continues to be the prime platform for equestrian themed films from around the world.  The event offers feature films, documentaries, music videos, shorts, commercials, training films, art, literature and discussion panels on current equine based topics.

Candace Wade moderated a panel called “Soring – What Are They Thinking” at the 2015 festival. She was invited back this year to continue to re-explore the issue of soring of big lick Tennessee Walking Horses with new panel members and with a second panel titled “Performance Tennessee Walking Horses – Training, Showing and . . . What’s Next?” This expanded panel explored what effect living, training and showing in the stacked shoes and chains may have on the mental and physical welfare of the horse. Live streams of the panels can be viewed on the Equus Film Festival site <>.

Wade is the author of the book Horse Sluts – The Saga of Two Women on the Trail of Their Yeehaw -- a “pizza and wine” conversation with other mature riders who started riding in their 40’s. The journey is shared with humor and honesty.

Horse Sluts is available on Amazon.

Candace writes political diatribe, wrote "Hillary's View" pet column and four unpublished film scripts.  She learned to ride at age 46. Candace is audacious about tackling stuff she doesn't know how to do. Born in Los Angeles, she lives in Franklin, TN with her husband Bill and dog Luccia. She continues to do anything, try any equine activity in order to ride a horse.
