“I have never stopped appreciating how the people who were once my heroes have since become my peers. Never has that been truer than since joining the fine company of American Horse Publications Chris Brune Spirit Award winners,” said equinista L.A. Sokolowski-Pomeroy, whose award-winning contributions as an equestrian sports journalist and publicist were recognized in June with the 2017 AHP Chris Brune Spirit Award at the annual conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She also received her second consecutive (and fourth overall) AHP award for excellence in equine journalism for ‘No More a Prisoner,’ on the horse-human bonds built within the Arizona Wild Horse & Inmates Program (WHIP), for Western Horse & Gun magazine, for whom she accepted first place last year for best cover story. In 2010-2011 she earned back-to-back AHP Awards for best freelance equine journalism and in 2016 earned a Syracuse Press Club award for outstanding sports writing for New York Horse.
The New York State native began her career producing news on the Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing industries for Saratoga Springs-based OurTown TV after completing a B.A. in English/Journalism from SUNY-Albany. She went on to graduate summa cum laude with an A.S. degree in Equine Business from Johnson & Wales University and oversee press relations for national and FEI-level clients including the Atlanta Olympic Committee, Gladstone Driving Association, IHSA National Championships, Live Oak International, National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, USET and USET Festival of Champions, Winter Equestrian Festival and World Pair Driving Championships.
The AHP Chris Brune Spirit Award is presented to the member or staff who has done the most consistently to assist and support the association and is selected by the Board of Directors. AHP Spirit Award recipients include Chris Brune (2004), Lua Oas Southard (2005), Barrie Reightler (2006), Ellen Kiser (2007), Daniel K. Lew (2008), Christy West (2009), Becki Pitcher (2010), Doug Hayes (2011), Pat Trowbridge (2012), Jennifer Bryant (2013), Kimberly Brown (2014), Cheryl Erpelding (2015) and Judy Lincoln (2016).
L.A.’s equinista (fashionista + equestrienne) byline can be found in Saratoga’s 2017 racing season publication, The Equicurian, in her His & Hers column in Elite Equestrian, and upcoming issues of Holistic Horse, New York Horse and Western Horse & Gun.
