Jessie Haas has won the Equine Media Award for Nonfiction Books from American Horse Publications (AHP) for THE HORSE-LOVER'S ENCYCLOPEDIA, 2nd Edition (Storey Publishing, 2017). The Equine Media Awards were announced at AHP's annual conference in Hunt Valley, Maryland in June 2018.
The judges noted: “Impressively comprehensive, this book is something any horse enthusiast could learn from and enjoy paging through. Definitions are clear and simple. The breadth of coverage is noteworthy: equine ailments, breeds, disciplines, uses. Photos and drawings enhance the explanations. Lots of interesting tidbits that show the writer did her research.”
The book is an update of STOREY'S HORSE-LOVER'S ENCYCLOPEDIA, published in 2001. The 2017 edition received a design makeover, with over 1,700 entries, including 90 breed profiles, and full-color pictures on nearly every page. Full-color photos are by internationally renowned equine photographer Bob Langrish, and by Dusty Perin.
Deborah Burns, acquiring editor at Storey Publishing, says, “Jessie Haas was the ideal choice to author this Encyclopedia. Her broad knowledge, wide experience, stellar writing, and deep love of equines make every page shine.”
Jessie Haas is the author of 40 books, including HORSE CRAZY! (Storey Publishing 2009), which also won the Nonfiction Book Award from AHP. She is best known for her children's horse books, including the Bramble and Maggie series (Candlewick) and RESCUE (Boyds Mills Press, 2018.) She lives in rural Vermont with her husband, two Morgan mares, and a Belgian gelding.
