January is a great time to clean out your tack rooms – discarding tack and equipment that you don’t use anymore. Not only will cleaning out the clutter help get you off to a great start for the New Year, these things can be sold at one of the many used 4-H tack sales that are held throughout country during the late winter.
“If it doesn’t fit and you haven’t used it – get rid of it and sell it,” says Laurie Cerny, editor of www.goodhorse-keeping.com
“Don’t make the mistake of hanging onto stuff – especially show clothing and tack,” Cerny says. “These things go out of style. And even when stored properly indoors fabric and leather will still age over time.”
Cerny, herself, learned her lesson years ago by hanging onto a headstall and breastcollar she had used on her show gelding.
“It had heart shaped silver conchos on it, which were popular in the early 1980s. I kept it for sentimental reasons. Later, when I decided to sell it, it was too dated. In fact, heart shaped conchos never came back in style,” she said.
