While the inner city, paved streets of Compton, California are the last place you would expect to find a thriving horse program, the Compton Jr Equestrians along with the Compton Cowboys have created just that — a safe haven for youth to come and enjoy horses. In the tough streets of Compton where violence and drugs are prevalent and many young people turn to gangs for purpose and to keep themselves safe, there is a group of individuals making a difference by giving access to the healing power and emotional connection of horses. Most of the horses used in the program are from the auction and were neglected and abused. One Compton Cowboy said, “I’m not sure if I saved the horse or if the horse saved me.” When Troxel Athlete and World Champion Barrel Racer Fallon Taylor called to say she was going to visit this unique program to feature it on her popular Vlog, Troxel wanted to get involved too.
“We immediately asked if they needed new helmets for their program,” said Troxel Brand Manager Jenny Beverage. “Our team sent several boxes of our most popular Spirit helmet in several colors, graphics and sizes for the Compton Jr Equestrians to use in their program. Although the kids where at school when Fallon was there, we received word back that the kids were very excited to have new helmets!” Fostering new riders is important to grow equestrian sports and programs like the Compton Jr Equestrians offer kids the chance to take a positive path and feel a sense of belonging through interacting with horses and becoming riders.
