California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday the appointment of Dr. Gregory Ferraro to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB). Dr. Ferraro was the director of the University of California, Davis Center for Equine Health from 1997 to 2011 and associate director of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital from 2011 to 2014. A well-known surgeon and Thoroughbred racehorse specialist who earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Ferraro was among the first to adapt human arthroscopic surgical techniques in horses.
“I am honored to be selected by the governor to serve on the Board,” said Ferraro. “I intend to make a very strong effort to improve the situation of horse racing in California. I am looking forward to working with all partners involved in the horse racing industry.”
Dr. Ferraro brings more than 25 years of racetrack veterinary experience to his new role, along with a well-established record of successful private practice and university service. He has held leadership positions with several influential organizations, including the Equine Advisory Task Force for the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the California Thoroughbred Foundation, the California State Veterinary Medical Board, the Horse Racing Board Medication Committee, the Southern California Equine Foundation, the International Animal Welfare Training Institute, and the Dolly Green Research Foundation. He is currently a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
