Horse Book Author Writer of the Year Finalist

Valerie Ormond nominated for top military writing award

The Military Writers Society of America (MWSA) announced Valerie Ormond as one of the finalists for its prestigious Mike Mullins Memorial Writer of the Year Award for 2019. Ormond’s novels, Believing In Horses, and Believing In Horses, Too, won Gold Medals in the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA) book awards and five other first place awards. A lifelong horse person, she has also authored equine-related articles for Sidelines, The Equiery, Capital Gazette, Bowie-Blade News, Inside the Gate, and more.

MWSA will recognize the winner during its annual awards banquet in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sep. 14, 2019. Ormond also will be a member of the faculty presenting a free veterans’ writing workshop before the formal conference. She has been a volunteer supporting MWSA since 2012. MWSA’s mission is to help military and veterans write their stories.

Ormond retired as a Navy Captain following 25 years as an intelligence officer and began her second career as a writer. She founded her business, Veteran Writing Services, LLC, providing companies and organizations professional writing, editing, and consulting services. Her current and past non-fiction stories have been published internationally in books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs.

Ormond lives in Maryland with her husband, Jaime Navarro, also a retired Navy Captain. They spend their spare time with their wonderful family, friends, three horses, and two dogs.
