The Equiery Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Maryland Horse Council celebrates The Equiery’s 30th Anniversary with extensive look back in the 350th edition of Maryland’s leading horse publication.

The December 2020 Equiery not only marks the 30th anniversary of the magazine, but also the 350th edition! Over the past year, we have been posting Equiery covers from the first 29 years on our Facebook page, asking followers to vote on their favorite covers from each year. The fan favorite covers are highlighted on the December 2020 cover with more fun anniversary content inside including personal memories from current and former Equiery staffers as well as our readers’ top five favorite Equiery covers of all time. Also in this milestone issue is a look back at Equiery interns and where they are now.

The Equiery has grown with the Maryland horse community over the last 30 years and it is exciting to look back at some of the great moments (and Equiery covers) from over the years” said Ross Peddicord, Executive Director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, a Maryland State Government Agency that promotes and regulates the horse industry in the state.

In December of 1990, the very first issue of The Equiery hit tack and feed stores in central Maryland. The brainchild of Crystal Brumme Pickett and Mercedes Clemens, The Equiery was initially designed to connect Maryland horse people to Maryland riding and boarding stables but quickly grew into Maryland’s source for horse information.

“One can only be impressed by how these two women in their twenties started this publication from scratch, hand delivering the magazine to a growing number of distributors across the state. It took a lot of effort to get this magazine off the ground and the fact that it is still going strong 30 years later is a true testimonial to these two horsewomen!” said Katherine O. Rizzo, Editor-in-Chief of The Equiery.

Now, under the ownership of the Maryland Horse Council since 2018, The Equiery has only been strengthened in its ability to speak for Maryland’s horse community As we look forward to another 30 years (and more!), we pause to thank our readers, contributors, advertisers, distributors and everyone who has supported The Equiery over the past three decades. Thank you!
