Veterinary CE Event Aims to Bring Cutting Edge Diagnostic Information to Support Laminitic, Obese and Senior Horses to Help an Ever-Growing Population of Horses Aged 20+ Years

Amy Polkes, DVM, DACVIM will present the latest information on diagnostic and wellness testing recommendations for laminitic, obese and senior horses, along with information on how to talk to owners about the changing medical needs of these special cases. Nettie Liburt, PhD, PAS and Pat Harris, MA, PhD, VetMB, DipECVCN, MRCVS & RCVS are also presenters as part of the MARS EQUESTRIAN™ Equine Veterinary Continuing Education Series.

Research and availability of cutting-edge diagnostic services and innovative offerings for equine patients is evolving rapidly. This series of Equine Veterinary Continuing Education seminars, presented by MARS EQUESTRIAN™, intends to offer a total of six Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE)-CE credits to veterinarians and veterinary technicians this fall. The virtual series will take place on three consecutive Saturday mornings from 10:00am-12:00pm EST on Oct. 30, Nov. 6 and Nov. 13. Topics will include Obesity, Laminitis and the Senior Horse covering relevant research and providing up to date nutritional advice, as well as current guidance on diagnostics. There will be also be discussion on guidance for horse owners on the importance of nutritional management from Nettie Liburt, PhD, PAS along with the latest research from Pat Harris, MA, PhD, VetMB, DipECVCN, MRCVS & RCVS Specialist Veterinary Clinical Nutrition (Equine).

Dr. Amy Polkes received her veterinary degree from Purdue University and then completed a residency and board certification in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Polkes has been with Antech Diagnostics for the last 20 years. She has helped facilitate the expansion of the Equine Diagnostic division within Antech to provide more comprehensive and advanced equine diagnostic testing options.

Dr. Polkes provides consultation on diagnostic testing questions and supports the equine veterinary community with continuing education by speaking at many local and national meetings. She also continues to practice clinical medicine with her mobile Equine Internal Medicine specialty practice where she brings advanced diagnostics and expertise to her patients at the farm throughout the Northeast. She is actively involved in the ACVIM organization serving on committees to represent Equine Internal Specialists in private practice.

Dr. Polkes currently resides in Maryland with her husband (a small animal internal medicine specialist), 2 teenage children and 3 dogs. She enjoys spending time with her family and supporting her kids at their various sports events! She tries to find time to do her favorite activities of hiking, biking, skiing and she is hoping to start riding again now that her kids are independent.
