Horsemanship for Insatiable Learners

When it comes to horses, there are “horse people” who like to learn—and then there are the ones who just can’t learn enough. Julie Goodnight, a life-long rider and trainer, is one of those people and she’s created a retreat designed with insatiable learners like her in mind. A long time in the planning, the inaugural Horsemanship Immersion was held this month, with huge success and rave reviews!

A group of more than 40 equine enthusiasts from all over the country, varying in experience from veterinarians to “horse husbands,” all came together in a horse lover’s paradise– The C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado. With over 200 horses in one herd, it was a study lab like no other where students could observe and mingle with the herd during four action-packed days!

After arriving at the ranch and brief introductions, participants were whisked away via hay wagon to meet the herd, and enjoy “Horses and Happy Hour.” It was magical and memorable, as the group enjoyed beverages and appetizers as the sun set, while mingling with 200 horses in the spacious mountain meadow.

The following three days of horsemanship immersion offered lectures, demonstrations, hands-on workshops, equitation lessons and trail rides. Students learned to take vital signs, decipher gut sounds, clean and bandage wounds. Workshops on conformation, saddle fit, desensitizing, and round penning allowed students to be hands-on with horses—all  while enjoying the “5-spur” guest ranch, known for its hospitality and gourmet meals. The 4-day clinic ended with a fabulous ranch breakfast and an amazing trail ride in the mountains.

“Phenomenal! If I only had one word for the Immersion clinic, says clinic participant, Melinda Combs, DVM. “I have been to other Julie Goodnight clinics including with my own horse. This was above and beyond. Being at C Lazy U with the herd and having the opportunity to attend lectures and demos on topics including saddle fitting, conformation, behavior, veterinary care plus the participation in ground work, round penning and riding in such a wonderful environment was—phenomenal! Julie, Twyla and Lucy kept us entertained, educated and focused. Myself and my horse will continue to grow and benefit from this experience for a lifetime.”
