From early September through late November 2018, the Communications Department Fall Intern will receive broad experience in communications, public relations, media relations and writing during the busiest time of the year at Keeneland, which includes two sales and a race meet.

Preferred candidates possess an interest in pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred industry. Strong writing and communication skills; knowledge of reporting and newswriting, often on deadline, and proofreading skills must be demonstrated. The Communications intern will work with Keeneland’s social media, marketing, broadcast, sales and racing teams, and will gain a greater understanding of Keeneland and the Thoroughbred industry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

September Yearling Sale (Sept. 10-23) and November Breeding Stock Sale (Nov. 5-17)

  • Help compile press kit information.
  • Contribute content for daily barn notes (September Sale only).
  • Interview consignors/buyers during sale sessions.
  • Proofread materials as needed.
  • Provide notes/content for and photo/video images for use on Keeneland’s social media accounts.

Fall Race Meet (Oct. 5-27)

  • Draft press releases and assist with various press materials.
  • Compile/update media contact lists.
  • Assist with media credentials.
  • Assist notes team with compilation of daily barn notes; write news items.
  • Interview jockeys and trainers following stakes races.
  • Draft media advisories for on-track special events.
  • Aid staff with press box operations.
  • Assist with record-keeping, updating statistics.
  • Proofread materials as needed.
  • Provide notes/content for and photo/video images for use on Keeneland’s social media accounts.


  • Currently enrolled as a college junior or senior, or recently earned a degree in Journalism, Communications, Integrated Strategic Communications or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing and communications skills; ability to work with diverse clients.
  • Knowledge/experience in Thoroughbred industry preferred.
  • Availability during key periods of Keeneland sales and racing, especially Sept. 9-13; Wednesdays-Sundays in October and Nov. 5-8 and 12.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with social networking sites.
  • Organized with the ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
  • Creative and flexible, a proven self-starter.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to follow Keeneland’s policies and procedures.
