Director of Health Product Development

SmartPak is looking for a Director of Health Product Development to help expand on the offerings we provide to our customers through Smartpak. The Director of Health Product Development is responsible for identifying and bringing new equine and canine private label supplements into the product mix as well as reformulating existing supplements. This individual will use deep knowledge of research and product development and their understanding of the larger health, pharmaceutical, and supplement market as it pertains to equines, humans, canines, and other animals, to develop and reformulate products that will resonate with our customers. This individual will be responsible for designing new product formulas that take into consideration active and inactive ingredient levels as well as final product form, texture, and odor. The Director of Health Product Development will bring new formulas from concept to delivery and will manage all aspects of this process, including identifying opportunities to streamline efficiencies with manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. They will work closely with the Health Marketing Team and Consumer Teams to position new products and bring them to market. This individual is a key contributor to the overall strategy for private label supplements and will drive to budgeted financial goals through new product demand forecasting, management of product COGS and margin, and determining new product retail pricing. This is a strategic role that requires a hands-on approach from concept through the customer.

Essential & Detailed Job Functions:

  • Owns the identification and development of new private label Health products and is responsible for developing and executing the new product development roadmap
  • Oversee and implement product development policies, objectives, and initiatives
  • Lead new product development efforts from ideation through scale-up and commercial production; this includes the development of formula financials
  • Explore new innovations, ingredients, and processes that support continuous product improvement
  • Evaluate the potential and productivity of products in development; optimize financial productivity and overall quality of current assortment
  • Communicate status of product portfolio to leadership on on-going basis
  • Manage development timelines to ensure project milestones are met; proactively identify project risks and implement solutions to mitigate Execution of on-time product delivery according to the strategic plan and budgeted goals
  • Responsible for designing new product formulas including:
  • identifying and determining inclusion rates of active and inactive ingredients with the goal of delivering the health benefits of the new product
  • Considering final product form, texture, and odor
  • Responsible for identifying new product ingredient sources including:
  • Guidance in supplier selection and product development process to hit required initial costing and margin requirements
  • Strategic direction related to sourcing plans based on growth, including external drivers for vendor assessment, selection, country of origin, risks, etc.
  • Support the qualification of new raw materials, highlighting supply chain and cost implications
  • Assist in the creation of product documentation to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Maintains database of supplement formulation details from all contract manufacturers
  • Builds relationships with private label supplement formulation details contract manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, and other vendors
  • Travels as needed to visit new and existing suppliers
  • Partners with Marketing & Head of Health, finance, and other senior leaders to assess and determine product pricing
  • Assists with patent development and filing as needed
  • Works closely with QA to ensure new private label products meet pre-determined quality standards leads efforts to reconcile any potential discrepancies
  • Works with suppliers to get testing completed and report results
  • Works with key stakeholders to develop a research plan aimed at supporting and promoting new private label supplements
  • Assists the Health Marketing Team to brand and position private label supplements
  • Partners with Health Marketing Team on any packaging and branding initiatives
  • Collaborates with the Health Marketing Team and copywriter to produce content for new private label product class pages
  • Acts as a liaison for internal private label new product trainings and communications

  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job functions
  • Communicates ideas and messages cross-departmentally
  • Brings ideas from conception to execution
  • Works under deadline pressure and extra hours if needed on assignments
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in bringing new physical products from concept to launch, ideally supplements, pharmaceuticals, feed, or other targeted nutrition products
  • Bachelor’s degree with a Master’s degree or advanced certificate in nutrition, health, or other sciences preferred
  • Experience in sourcing and managing physical products with knowledge of product quality standards and testing
  • Ability to understand, forecast, and communicate the financial impact of product launches and product reformulations
  • Experience strategically setting the retail price of new products
  • Sound supply chain knowledge to be able to influence and drive operational and sourcing transformation
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, map out and set objectives and priorities, anticipate problems, and proactively work with cross-functional teams to resolve them
  • Ability to operate strategically, while understanding the tactical implications of decisions
  • Strong negotiations, problem solving, project management, leadership, and analytical skills
  • Team-oriented individual with the ability to motivate others
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing business environments, while providing exceptional situational leadership in a cross-functional environment
  • Horse and or canine experience preferred, but not required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to occasionally travel (including weekend days) as needed for the company
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, including PowerPoint, required
