Mustang Discovery Ride Project Heads Into Nevada for “Meet The Mustangs” Event In Carson City and Documentary Filming at Northern Nevada Correctional Center Wild Horse Training Facility

The Mustang Discovery Ride Project will be visiting the Northern Nevada Correctional Center Wild Horse Training Facility in Carson City Nevada October 21. There will be a “Meet the Mustangs” event on Saturday October 22 in Carson City, (location coming soon) starting at 3:00 PM. A film screening at 5:00 PM, of the Robert Redford produced, Steve Latham directed documentary, “The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses”.  An open discussion about the film led by Mustang Discovery Rider, Lisanne Fear, will be held after the screening. This event will be open to the public for free.

Equine Photographer and guest filmmaker, Ronda Gregorio, will be rejoining the MDR team for a week in Nevada, Washington DC left her wanting more! She will be riding along to capture more images and footage for the documentary. Gregorio is an equine photographer whose work includes a soon to be published coffee table book covering American Mustang horses and TIP Trainers, “Wild Heart: The Mustang Book Project” , will be available in early 2023.

Justin Pope, the Prison Industries Supervisor and Agriculture Programs Supervisor, will be speaking with the MDR team about their Wild Horse Program at The Northern Nevada Correctional Center/Stewart Conservation Camp Saddle Horse and Burro Training Program.

A cooperative partnership between the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Corrections-Silver State Industries. The NNCC is not only a holding facility with a capacity of up to 2,000 animals but it also has a training program where they utilize inmates to train wild horses to make available to the public for adoption. Because the facility is a correctional center, it is a closed facility yet does opens to the public a few times a year during the public adoption events.

Joining the team in Carson City will be Samantha Szesciorka, Nevada Discovery Ride Founder and American Discovery Trail Nevada State Coordinator. Szesciorka will be acting as Nevada host and tour guide as the team gets ready to head into California for the final leg of the journey.

Szesciorka has been called Nevada’s Trail Boss. She is passionate about Nevada and public lands and loves to explore. Nevada’s only equestrian adventure team! Since 2013, Samantha (human), Sage & Fremont (horses), and Juniper (dog) have logged thousands of trail miles exploring Nevada by foot, hoof, and paw. We have completed three long-distance treks across the state and are members of the Long Riders’ Guild, an international association of equestrian explorers.

Nevada is a state of extremes. It has the least rainfall of any state, one of the smallest populations, and twenty-eight north-south mountain ranges that wrinkle the floor of the Great Basin. In total Nevada has over 100 mountain ranges, making it the most mountainous state in the nation. Its mines have produced vast amounts of silver, gold, and copper. Most of its rivers drain into “sinks” without outlets where the water evaporates, leaving alkali mud flats and dry lakes. Yet, it is one of the most visited of the fifty states, thanks to Reno and Las Vegas.
