FLAIR® Equine Nasal Strips in Horse Racing

The 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships took place Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. Their popular slogan “THE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING” resonated with the team at Achieve Equine, LLC, maker of FLAIR Equine Nasal Strips, as they watched for horses wearing the product. The use of FLAIR Strips has grown in popularity within all types of horse racing, including graded stakes competitions. Introduced at the 1999 Breeders’ Cup, FLAIR Strips were worn on 3 of the 9 Breeders’ Cup race winners that year including CASH RUN, ANEES, and CAT THIEF. Today, FLAIR Strips can be found on racehorses all over the world.

Arguably one of the most iconic thoroughbred racehorses to ever wear FLAIR Strips, CALIFORNIA CHROME won the San Felipe Stakes, the Santa Anita Derby, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2014. He went on to become the American Horse of the Year wearing his signature White FLAIR Strip. In his bid for the Triple Crown that year, the seemingly simple White Strip generated a firestorm of controversy when CALIFORNIA CHROME’s trainer, Art Sherman, raised the possibility the colt may not run in the last leg of the Triple Crown if he was not allowed to wear his White Strip. At the time, equine nasal strips were not permitted for use by the New York Racing Association (NYRA). However, in a statement from NYRA and the State’s Gaming Commission, three stewards unanimously gave approval after consulting Scott Palmer, the equine medical director for the New York State Gaming Commission, who advised state stewards to discontinue their ban.

The future of FLAIR Strips in Thoroughbred racing is exciting with the continued and growing trend of owners and trainers optimizing their horses’ health and performance by using FLAIR Strips as part of their equine care. The 40th running of the Breeders’ Cup will be held at Santa Anita Park in 2023. We will be watching with excitement!
