#WeRideTogether Launches “Preventing Misconduct in Sports: Power Imbalances” PSA to Promote Healthy and Mindful Interactions Between Coaches and Athletes

Taking a Nuanced Approach to Explain Power Imbalances in Sports, Organization Continues to Develop Resources to Help Create Healthy Environments for All Participants.

#WeRideTogether, a non-profit whose mission is to prevent sexual misconduct in sport through education, awareness, and resources, is continuing to encourage conversation around the subject of sexual abuse and develop its educational resources with the latest PSA, “Preventing Misconduct in Sports: Power Imbalances.” Providing nuanced explanations of relationship dynamics, this easy-to-understand but high-impact PSA highlights how power imbalances are at play in athletic spaces but can sometimes be missed by others. For example, there are inherent power imbalances between a coach and athlete, and between an athlete and a medical practitioner. “Power Imbalances” also aims to educate members of athletic communities about mindful practices to keep power in check, and reminds viewers that consent is never possible when an athlete feels they do not have a choice.

“My hope is that all members of sporting communities develop an awareness of how power dynamics influence relationships,” says Kathryn McClain, MSW, MBA, #WeRideTogether Director of Programs and Partnerships. “This is essential to understanding and preventing predatory and abusive behaviors.”

Founded in 2021, #WeRideTogether started as an awareness campaign and educational website designed to empower, inform, and unite the equestrian community around sexual misconduct prevention and create healthy training environments for all sports. Showcasing powerful first-person interviews from sexual abuse survivors, #WeRideTogether promotes transparent dialogue around sexual misconduct, raises awareness for the many forms grooming and abuse can take, and helps diminish the stigma and fear of coming forward by giving survivors a safe platform to share their voices. The organization has since grown into a 501(c)3 and is creating a blueprint to help make all sports safer for youth, amateur, and professional athletes.
