Paulick Report Celebrates Seven Eclipse Awards In Six Years

As the awards ceremony for the 52nd annual Eclipse Awards approaches, the Paulick Report is proud to celebrate a total of seven awards for work published from 2016 through 2022. has been home to five Eclipse Award-winning pieces of writing and two photographs.

The Eclipse Awards are named after foundation Thoroughbred sire Eclipse. They are bestowed annually among horses and humans who are considered to have made outstanding contributions to the sport in the previous year. While most of the awards focus on successful horses and their connections, the award series has long included recognition for outstanding television, photography, writing and multi-media. The Eclipse Awards are considered the highest honor in the sport of North American Thoroughbred racing.

This year, contributing photographer Wendy Wooley will receive an award for her head-on image of Rich Strike and Hot Rod Charlie in the Grade 2 Lukas Classic. In 2020, photographer Alex Evers snapped the Eclipse Award-winning photo of the Kentucky Derby field entering the first turn before an empty grandstand.

The Paulick Report has won both awards in the writing category twice – in 2020, when editor-in-chief Natalie Voss picked up both the feature/commentary and news/enterprise awards for several pieces on Thoroughbred aftercare, and in 2016, when Voss won in the news/enterprise category for a look at traumatic brain injuries in jockeys and contributor John Scheinman picked up the feature award for a profile of Andy Beyer. In 2019, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills won the feature/commentary Eclipse for a story on now-defunct Mount Pleasant Meadows in his native Michigan.

“Wendy Wooley’s Eclipse Award-winning photo perfectly captured the intensity of the competition – between both the horses and riders – that we see in Thoroughbred racing,” said publisher Ray Paulick. “The competition among media for these awards is also intense, and I’m incredibly proud that our website has had the opportunity to showcase the phenomenal writers and photographers whose work has been recognized seven times in the last seven years by Eclipse Award judges.”

Launched in 2008 as an independent publication reporting on horse racing in the United States and around the world, the Paulick Report was co-founded by Ray Paulick and Brad Cummings.
