Managing Editor

Equine Network, publisher of The Horse: Your Guide to Equine Health Care and TheHorse.com, is looking for a Managing Editor with five-plus years of experience who is exceedingly organized, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has a keen eye for detail.

The Managing Editor assigns and prepares all print content for The Horse: Your Guide to Equine Health Care and longform content for TheHorse.com, working closely with veterinarians and researchers to ensure the material is accurate, up-to-date, and understandable to and useful for the hands-on horse owner. This individual develops, cultivates, and maintains a top-notch network of freelance writers focused on horse health. This individual also selects photos and visuals to enhance print and longform content, cultivating and maintaining a stable of photographers. The Managing Editor must move copy efficiently through the editing process, working closely with the Editorial Director to ensure accuracy and brand voice and with the Art Director to produce proofs.

Other duties include writing and editing other content distributed by The Horse, TheHorse.com, and StableManagement.com when required and creating and organizing material for special projects both print and online. The Managing Editor describes articles to the advertising department to aid sales. The individual also provides editorial support during live event production.

The position requires a solid working knowledge of equine anatomy, physiology, and problems associated with horse health. A degree in journalism or a related field is required for this position, along with at least five years of associated experience in equine-related publishing.

Note that this position will require occasional travel and evening/weekend work as deadlines demand.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

A degree in journalism or a related field, along with five-plus years of associated experience in publishing-preferably equine- or science-related.

A solid working knowledge of equine anatomy, physiology, and problems associated with horse health.

The ability to work with veterinarians and scientists to help convey complex concepts in a voice that not only engages the practitioner but also educates the horse owner in a voice a layperson can understand.

Exceptional relationship-building skills for cultivating and maintaining effective collaborations with various journalistic sources.

Mastery of Adobe InDesign, InCopy, and Acrobat.

Proficiency in WordPress and page builders such as Elementor.

An ability to maintain a top-notch network of freelance writers and photographers focused on horse health, and strong communication skills and ability to give writers guidance and feedback.

An eye for compelling, accurate imagery to illustrate horse health concepts.

The ability to move copy efficiently through the editing process, working closely with the Art Director to produce proofs and the Editorial Director to correct any issues prior to publication.

Must meet deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously and be flexible in the ever-changing environment of a fast-pivoting company.

The ability to write and edit other content distributed by The Horse and TheHorse.com when required and create and organize material for special projects both print and online. The flexibility to pinch hit and provide editorial support during live event production.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Teams.

Excellent organizational skills.

Sharp eye for detail.

Willingness to learn new skills as technology evolves and continuously improve workflows.
